With beautiful waterways, fresh oysters, boats for hire and outdoor cafes, Tea Gardens is a delightful destination on the southern end of the Great Lakes region. The village and natural beauty of the area has inspired many artists, and you can see local artists’ works in the Galleries in the Gardens.

The waterways are great for fishing and boating. You can hire kayaks from Lazy Paddles or take a guided tour with them and explore the Myall River, which is celebrated with the family-friendly Myall River Festival in October. Black Oaks picnic area by the river is a gorgeous spot for lunch.

A short drive across the ‘whistling’ bridge is the neighbouring town of Hawks Nest and the white sands of Hawks Nest Beach, also called Bennetts Beach. The ocean beach is a popular spot for surfing, fishing and walking. You’ll find accommodation options in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest.

Dolphins are likely to follow the small ferry from Tea Gardens to Nelson Bay, where you can take dolphin-watching cruises year-round or whale-watching cruises between May and November. Tea Gardens is a 2h 35 min drive from Sydney on the North Coast of NSW.

Hawks Nest Beach also known as Bennetts Beach, is the beginning of a long stretch of beach, which enters the Myall Lakes National Park and extends north to the fishing village of Seal Rocks through a virtual wildlife corridor. South of Hawks Nest Beach leads you to the Yacaaba Headland walk, your reward being fantastic views of the mouth of the Myall River across Port Stephens and north to Myall Lakes National Park.

Patrolled during school holidays and weekends over the summer, this beach is popular with those who enjoy four wheel driving and is situated close to parks, camping and all facilities.
