Northern Rivers - Yamba

Famous for world-class surf breaks, beautiful beaches and succulent prawns, Yamba is a popular destination in the Northern Rivers region on the NSW North Coast. You’ll discover all the enticing qualities of a seaside holiday resort town and more, including national parks and whale watching.

At the mouth of the Clarence River, Yamba has a relaxed vibe, delicious cafes and restaurants, and an events calendar filled with tasty festivals, tempting markets and fun sports. There are waterside parks for picnics, a golf course and heritage walks to landmarks such as the Yamba Lighthouse.

With mild winters and long summers, Yamba is a perfect escape all year. A kayaking tour with Yamba Kayak is a lovely way to see dolphins in the estuary, Australia’s largest east coast river system. Clarence River Ferries offers scenic cruises and a passenger service to Iluka, on the northern side.

Anglers are reeled in by beach, estuary and rock fishing. You can hire boats and special fishing kayaks, and pop into one of the bait and tackle shops for tips on where the fish are biting. Why not try your luck in the Tim the Bream Yamba Fishing Classic, an annual recreational fishing tournament.

The deep sea fishing is exhilarating. Both Reel Time Charters and Yamba Fishing and Charters offer fishing expeditions in the Pacific Ocean. The local fishing fleet is testament to the abundant fish. You can savour locally caught seafood, including famous Yamba prawns, at fish shops and restaurants.

Just south of Yamba is Angourie, one of Australia’s National Surfing Reserves. Angourie Point is the ‘best right hand point break in Australia,’ former world surfing champion Mark Richards says on the National Surfing Reserves’ website. A great multi-day coastal hike in a national park begins here, too.

The Yuraygir coastal walk to Red Rock follows ancient emu trails in the Yuraygir National Park. There are seaside villages such as Brooms Head along the 65km hike, and campgrounds are dotted along the track, including at Sandon River, the northernmost point of the Solitary Islands Marine Park.
